Christian A. Lang

As a photographer and filmmaker, I am drawn to the tension between presence and absence, between form and dissolution, and between the documentary and the imaginary. I seek images that are not merely observed but experienced—moments in which atmosphere becomes tangible and the familiar shifts into something enigmatic, even metaphysical. Whether working with analogue medium- and large-format cameras or digital processes, my work explores memory and transformation, perception, and the layered meanings of time.
My studies in Music, Theatre and Film at the Free University of Berlin under Prof. Erika Fischer-Lichte and Prof. Albrecht Riethmüller sharpened my understanding of dramaturgy, staging and visual narrative. During my film training in New York, I studied with cinematographer and multiple Emmy Award winner Sol Negrin, who taught me the art of shaping light and composing the image. Sculptor Michel Rummel sensitised me to spatial relationships, structures and form, while the work of the Düsseldorf School—particularly Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, Thomas Ruff and Candida Höfer—has had a lasting influence on my understanding of the conceptual power of photography.
For several years, I have shared my experience in lighting and visual composition through intensive seminars at the Berlin University of the Arts and the Erich Pommer Institute, exploring the intersections between cinematic narrative and photographic composition.
