OSZILLATIONEN
The portrait series Oszillationen is a profound experiment in the interplay between visual impression and emotional perception. Created on analogue medium-format film, the series examines the fragile relationship between perception, memory, and identity.
In these photographs, children do not appear as stereotyped icons of innocence, but as autonomous subjects whose unembellished expressions resist easy interpretation. Their gazes and gestures oscillate between vulnerability and defiance, challenging the delicate balance between intimacy and distance, projection and identification.
At the heart of the composition lies a layer of ornamental glass placed between the camera and the subjects. Acting as a translucent membrane, it transforms the visual field, blurring the boundaries between photographic reality and painterly abstraction. Drawing consciously on the aesthetic language of classical portrait painting, this layer amplifies the tension between presence and absence, reality and recollection.
Through this play of clarity and ambiguity, the children’s faces turn into mirrors of our own cultural imprints, memories, and longings. The image prompts a fundamental question: Do we see the child in its immediacy, or are we projecting our own past into the frame?
